Rheumatologist

Rheumatology

Joint or organ problems involving inflammation are considered rheumatic complaints. A rheumatologist can help with rheumatic complaints. Rheumatologists examine and treat people with rheumatic diseases.

About 100 different conditions are classified as rheumatic diseases. These are conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system that are not caused by an accident. The most common symptoms of rheumatic disease are pain, stiffness, fatigue and swollen joints. Patients usually have had these symptoms for some time before eventually being referred to a rheumatologist who can make a diagnosis.

Appointment with the rheumatologist

An appointment with the rheumatologist begins with a discussion of the symptoms and problems. This is followed by a physical examination in which the joints are examined and tested.

A joint aspiration, blood tests or an X-ray may be needed to establish the correct diagnosis. Once the problem is clear, treatment begins. This may involve medication, surgery or lifestyle advice.

Working with other specialists

The rheumatologist often works with other specialists, such as an orthopedist when surgery is needed, or a neurologist when pain management is required. A physical therapist is also often involved to help people move better or learn to manage their limitations.
