Geriatric physical therapy

A geriatric physical therapist specializes in treating people who experience physical complaints due to older age. People who are still relatively young but, for example, have had a stroke or have Parkinson's disease are also treated within geriatric physical therapy.

The symptoms seen in geriatric physical therapy are often extensive and complex and do not always lie solely in the musculoskeletal system. Consider, for example, someone with dementia who has fallen and broken a hip.

This group of patients requires specific knowledge about the changes that occur as a result of aging. Additionally, someone with a stroke or dementia also requires a different approach and manner of interaction than an otherwise healthy patient.

Working method of a geriatric physical therapist

The geriatric physical therapist has a wide range of tests and exercises for this patient group. In general, the treatment focuses on improving or maintaining mobility and independence.

This is usually done by giving exercise therapy, which trains muscle strength, fitness, and balance. When real improvement is no longer possible, an attempt will be made to keep the quality of life as good as possible.

Involvement of family and caregivers

The geriatric physical therapist often does not work only with the patient. Others such as children, caregivers, or a partner are also regularly involved.

Where does a geriatric physical therapist work?

Because the geriatric physical therapist often works with older and/or unwell people, they are, alongside private practices, also often found in assisted living or nursing homes, hospitals, and rehabilitation centers. Here they work together with the geriatrician (specialist in elderly medicine), primary care physician, and care staff.
