Edema therapy
Edema is another word for a fluid buildup somewhere in the body where it should not be. An edema therapist can help you get rid of it again.
People may, for example, suffer from edema with cancer or from a problem of the blood or lymph vessels. Edema can also occur after surgery, an accident, or radiation.
Edema therapy treatment
An edema therapist has various treatment techniques at their disposal to stimulate the drainage of excess fluid. Think of muscle and breathing exercises by which the fluid is, as it were, pumped away and drained via the blood and lymph vessels.
Certain positions can also reduce the swelling. The edema therapist knows which positions are and are not good for fluid buildup in a particular body region.
The edema therapist can also use a special massage technique. Here, the fluid is moved with the therapist's hand grips to parts of the body that can absorb the fluid. This is always in the direction of the heart.
To prevent, during the day, for example, the legs from swelling again, special stockings or bandages can also be used.
Where does an edema therapist work?
An edema physical therapist often works in a private practice and will collaborate with surgeons, oncologists, and family doctors.
