Pantoprazole
Pantoprazole is a stomach acid reducer. This means it reduces the production of stomach acid by irreversibly inhibiting the proton pump.
What is pantoprazole used for?
Symptoms for which people quickly take easily available acid reducers include heartburn, reflux of stomach acid into the esophagus, and nausea. A specialist or family doctor can prescribe pantoprazole in the case of stomach complaints, a stomach ulcer, or a duodenal ulcer.
It is also often used for Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a rare condition with many stomach complaints. Finally, pantoprazole can be prescribed to protect the stomach while using medicines that carry a risk of stomach damage.
What are possible side effects of pantoprazole?
In practice, side effects occur only rarely, in fewer than 1 out of 100 people. Examples include gastrointestinal complaints such as vomiting, constipation, and nausea. Double or blurred vision, fatigue, and sleep disorders are also very rare side effects.
Where is pantoprazole available?
Pantoprazole has been available on the international market since 1995. The medicine is administered in the hospital in tablet form or as an injection. At low doses, it is also available from the pharmacy or drugstore under the brand name Pantozol or the generic pantoprazole. In addition, there is a combination pack of two antibiotics and an acid reducer available under the brand name Panclamox.
