Ibuprofen

Ibuprofen is both an anti-inflammatory and a pain reliever and is often used for physical complaints that involve signs of inflammation. It suppresses pain and reduces inflammation.

Because ibuprofen does not address the underlying cause of these symptoms, it is advisable to also consult a physical therapist. The physical therapist can assess whether the pain and/or inflammatory features fall within their field and start treatment if necessary.

What is ibuprofen used for?

For physical symptoms with inflammatory features, the primary care physician can prescribe ibuprofen. Examples include bursitis, muscle pain, reumatoïde artritis (rheumatoid arthritis), gout, joint pain, and back pain.

What are possible side effects of ibuprofen?

Side effects are possible with the use of ibuprofen. The most common side effects are stomach and intestinal problems. These are seen in 10 to 30 out of 100 people who use the medicine. Slightly less common (in 1 to 10 out of 100 people) are complaints such as stomach or intestinal ulcer, fatigue, headache, and dizziness.

Where is ibuprofen available?

Ibuprofen is, like diclofenac and naproxen, an NSAID (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug). Ibuprofen is produced in different dosages, namely 200 milligrams (mg), 400 mg, 600 mg, and 1000 mg.

Well-known brand names of ibuprofen are Advil and Nurofen.
