Strassburg Sock

Night splint

The Strassburg Sock is an elastic stocking used for pain related to the plantar fascia under the foot. With a hook-and-loop fastener, the sock pulls the forefoot closer to the shin. The Strassburg Sock was designed by Dr. David Strassburg in 1993.

Dr. Strassburg himself suffered from a painful plantar fascia under the sole of the foot. He came up with the idea of stretching this fascia during the night. According to him, this would lead to more relaxation of the fascia and therefore to a reduction in pain.

How does the Strassburg Sock work?

The Strassburg Sock applies stretch to the Achilles tendon and the plantar fascia under the sole of the foot. Because of this forced position, the ankle remains in its most bent position, called dorsiflexion. The continuous stretch on the plantar fascia prevents it from contracting, so its length stays the same. As a result, the tension in the plantar fascia and the pain decrease.

The intention is to wear the stocking for at least 6 hours in a row. For this reason, nighttime is most suitable. As a treatment for heel spur symptoms, it is recommended to use the sock for at least two to three months.

What is a Strassburg Sock used for?

Use of the Strassburg Sock is mainly recommended for heel spur, Achilles tendinopathy (tendinitis), and plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of the plantar fascia. For the best possible outcome, it is important to have symptoms evaluated first by a physical therapist or podiatrist. After the physical exam, they will decide whether a Strassburg Sock will influence the symptoms positively.

There are also a number of situations in which using the Strassburg Sock is not recommended. These include lymphedema (fluid under the skin), skin rash, and open wounds. In case of doubt, it is wise to discuss this first with your primary care physician or therapist.

Where can I buy a Strassburg Sock?

A Strassburg Sock is available at most medical supply stores or drugstores. Many physical therapy practices or podiatry practices also offer the sock. For the best results, it is advisable to combine the Strassburg Sock with other (physical therapy) treatments, stretching exercises, and orthotic insoles.
