Myofeedback

Using myofeedback, the electrical signal that a muscle emits is measured with electrodes. Myofeedback (muscle feedback) thus provides information about the level of muscle activity at rest and during movement.

Thanks to myofeedback, it can be determined during treatment whether a muscle is relaxed or very tense. A visible and/or audible signal on the device makes this muscle activity clear.

Myofeedback for examination and treatment

Myofeedback is used for both examination and treatment. During the myofeedback examination, it is assessed whether there is high or low muscle tension. Treatment is aimed at consciously contracting or relaxing the muscle or muscles. Thanks to the feedback the device provides, very targeted practice is possible. Through (relaxation) exercises and advice, the goal is that later, even without using the myofeedback device, the right balance is achieved.

Pelvic physiotherapists regularly use myofeedback to measure the activity of the pelvic floor muscles. Myofeedback is also used to make people aware when, for example, they sit very tensely at their desk. In such treatments, both posture and the workstation are evaluated. Both should be optimized.

In addition to the myofeedback devices used in the clinic, there are also portable versions. The advantage is that they can measure over a longer period and can therefore be used during daily activities. Myofeedback shows many similarities with electromyography (EMG examination).
