Thumb brace
A thumb brace (support strap) is intended to support the thumb and guide its movements. It helps reduce pain and promotes recovery. Thumb braces are used for injuries such as tendinitis, skier's thumb, and thumb osteoarthritis. They are also used after surgery or to prevent (new) injuries.
When is using a thumb brace necessary?
For thumb complaints such as osteoarthritis, a skier's thumb, or De Quervain's disease, a thumb brace relieves symptoms. Depending on the material of the brace, (part of) the thumb cannot move or moves less well. Hard braces allow less movement than soft ones. Thumb braces therefore provide more firmness and support during movements or when muscle strength is reduced.
With early symptoms, using a brace slows the increase in pain and further damage.
How long should you use a thumb brace?
When and how long a brace is worn depends on the symptoms. In some cases, wearing the brace is only necessary during certain activities. Sometimes it is necessary to wear the thumb brace continuously. This is decided in consultation with the doctor or (hand) physical therapist. They can also advise which type of thumb brace is best. A custom-made thumb brace is also an option.
As soon as possible, the use of the brace is phased out. After all, the thumb has become accustomed to the support of the thumb brace. If the brace is worn for a long time, the muscles weaken and the thumb joints stiffen.
Is anything else needed besides a thumb brace to recover?
Wearing a thumb brace alone is not sufficient as a solution for the symptoms. The thumb injury is a sign of an overload or an underlying condition. For proper treatment, it is necessary to identify the cause of the symptoms. Contact a doctor or a specialized hand physical therapist for this.
