Intermittent claudication or peripheral arterial disease (PAD)

Intermittent claudication develops due to fat deposition in the wall of the artery. But how does fat deposition arise? Heredity is one of the causes. This article describes the main causes that are related to nutrition and lifestyle.

What is intermittent claudication?

Intermittent claudication results from a narrowing or blockage of an artery in or to the legs. The arteries in the legs then supply too little oxygen to the muscles used for walking. The term 'intermittent claudication' (also called 'shop window legs') is apt because patients want to save face when they are forced to rest due to the pain. They may, for example, look in a shop window while they rest, which is less noticeable.

Development

Fat deposition in the inner wall of the artery occurs due to calcification of the artery, hence the term arteriosclerosis. This process begins with small injuries in the wall of the artery. Fats and inflammatory cells adhere to these. Arteriosclerosis is related to aging but is accelerated by various risk factors.

Main causes

The main causes are smoking and diabetes. Other risk factors are hereditary predisposition, insufficient physical activity, an abnormal cholesterol profile, high blood pressure, poor nutrition, and a deficiency of nutrients (nutrients) such as vitamins C, K2, E, B6, folate, B12, selenium, magnesium, and essential fats.

1. Smoking
Nicotine constricts blood vessels and impedes optimal oxygen transport through the blood. Stopping smoking is necessary to prevent worsening.

2. Diabetes
Especially at an older age, circulatory disorders in the legs are associated with overweight and poorer functioning of the pancreas, which is responsible for the production of insulin. Overweight impedes physical activities and is an important risk factor for high blood pressure and diabetes. Losing weight ensures that blood sugar levels decrease and the risk of intermittent claudication decreases.

3. Vitamin deficiency
Vitamin E, in particular, is associated with the functioning of our cardiovascular system. It strengthens the vessel walls and slows arteriosclerosis. Vitamin E ensures that tissues use their oxygen more efficiently, helps prevent thrombosis (blood clots), and promotes the formation of new blood vessels at or along the blocked sites.

Treatment

Treatment starts with a diagnosis by a family doctor or specialist. They may prescribe medicines to reduce the symptoms immediately.

Exercise is beneficial for people with intermittent claudication, even though it is painful. It is good for the circulation and promotes metabolism. Exercising more is often an adjustment of the existing lifestyle. Self-discipline is therefore required. A physiotherapist can help with this. Physiotherapeutic treatment consists of walking therapy and is aimed at:

  • Reducing pain symptoms.
  • Improving endurance and muscle strength.
  • Increasing the pain-free walking distance.
  • Encouraging a responsible lifestyle.
