Additional testing

The physical examination performed by the physiotherapist does not always provide sufficient information. It may then be relevant to carry out additional testing.

Examples of additional tests include an X-ray or an MRI scan. Some tests can be carried out by the physical therapist themself (ultrasound, myofeedback), while others are performed in a hospital or clinic (X-ray, MRI scan, EMG, etc.). A referral from the family doctor is usually required for a hospital-based test.

Additional testing can be important to determine exactly what is going on or how extensive the damage is. This allows the physical therapist to make a better assessment of the severity of the injury and adjust the treatment accordingly. It also makes it easier to say something about the expected recovery.
